Consumers today have a plethora of options to choose from when shopping for car insurance, so here are a few tips to help you compare car insurance quotes.
Can I Skip the Insurance?
The question has often been asked, ‘Do I really need car insurance?’ These folks are not trying to shirk their responsibilities. The truth is that insurance can be expensive and this is one more burden that they wish they didn’t have to bear.
The reality that drivers must face is that they are not legally allowed to drive without it. So yes, you really need it. The reason is that accidents happen everyday and insurance will protect you, your passengers, and your property if you are involved in such an event.
What First-Timers Need to Know
If you are first-time automobile insurance buyer, there are a few terms that you need to know. The three main types of insurance that you are shopping for are liability, collision, and comprehensive. The forth term is called a deductible.
Liability insurance is the basic insurance coverage that you are required to have in order to legally drive your car. Liability insurance means the driver takes responsibility to pay for the damages they cause in an accident. Always remember that damages are the responsibility of the person who is at fault in the accident. If, for example, someone crashes into you because they didn’t stop when they should have, their insurance will pay the cost for the repairs to your car.
Collision insurance pays for the damage done to the car if you cause an accident. Most collision policies are subject to a deductible. A deductible is the amount you have to pay for the repair. Many people opt for a higher deductible in order to lower their monthly insurance payments.
Comprehensive insurance is a plan that covers the cost associated with damage or loss to your vehicle for something other than an accident. If for example, your car catches fire or the neighborhood troublemaker slashes your tires, comprehensive insurance will cover the damages.
Getting the Best Rate Possible
Buying car insurance can be an overwhelming proposition. But it is vital to first realize that comparing plans is like comparing apples to oranges. Although your friend in Framingham may claim to have the cheapest plan available, her situation may not apply to you. Each state or location mandates their own insurance requirements, so her plan may not square with yours.
The amount you pay for insurance will change depending upon your age, where you live, how many miles that you drive, and your previous driving record. For those who have a clean driving record, that means that they have never caused an accident, they will likely pay less than their more accident-prone friends.
Now it’s time to go shopping. There are many choices online to help you compare automobile insurance rates. But it’s important to understand that this is not your only option. The old-fashioned way, picking up the phone and making a few calls also works well. Try calling the company that insures your home or apartment. Many companies offer discounts if you hold multiple plans with the same agency. If you are still in school, talk to your parent’s agent. It is likely that they will offer you a good rate because your family has been a long-time customer.
Insurance is a necessity if you want to drive. Although there are a number of things to consider when you compare car insurance quotes, with a little research, you will be able to find a plan that fits your needs.
